KUROTANI WASHI GUIDE
Where does a single sheet of washi originate?
Is it from the kozo bark?
Is it from pure water?
Or is it the craftsmanship of the artisans?
All of these are correct answers.
However, when tracing the long history of Kurotani washi, these alone did not suffice to explain it.
This land was not suited to rice cultivation.
The people engaged with nature, cultivated kozo, made paper, and built their lives around that paper.
As the times change, so too does the paper people need.
From umbrella paper to price tags,
from ledger paper to silk cocoon bags,
from military paper to folk art paper,
and on to new uses for a new era.
It was the paper itself that kept changing.
What remained unchanged was the endeavour to continue creating what people needed in this land.
The land nurtures people,
people nurture culture,
and culture is passed down to the future whilst adapting to the times.
The KUROTANI WASHI GUIDE is not a guidebook introducing the methods of washi production.
Why has Kurotani washi managed to survive for so long?
This is a record of a journey tracing the reasons behind this, whilst walking through this land and engaging with this culture.
🇬🇧 Culture began right here. It is said that the history of Kurotani washi began some 800 years ago.
However, it did not begin simply because ‘they wanted to make washi’.
Kurotani is a village nestled in a valley surrounded on all sides by mountains.
Whilst blessed with abundant natural beauty, it was difficult to cultivate large fields,
and the environment was too harsh to sustain a livelihood through rice farming alone.
What the people of that land discovered was a plant called ‘kōzo’ (paper mulberry).
Kozo thrived in this region, and the people passed down the technique of using its fibres to make paper.
Eventually, washi became a vital industry supporting their livelihoods,
and it became so indispensable to the region that it was even sometimes paid as a tax.
In other words, Kurotani washi did not originate as a craft.
It was a way of life born out of the people’s need to survive in this land.
This story is not merely the history of a single sheet of paper
It is also the history of the wisdom born from the environment,
as the people who lived in harmony with the land embraced nature.

🇬🇧 It was the land that determined the size of the paper The village of Kurotani lies in a valley flanked by mountains on both sides.
Since ancient times, Kurotani has been producing a type of washi paper known as ‘kasaban’,
measuring approximately 48 × 40 centimetres.
These dimensions are no coincidence.
At that time, the length from the centre to the rim of the traditional Japanese umbrellas (ban-gasa) commonly produced was also approximately 48 centimetres.
By producing washi of this size in Kurodani,
it could be used as umbrella paper without any waste.
After the paper is made, each sheet is mounted onto a board and slowly dried in the sunlight.
However, due to Kurodani’s valley topography, it was not possible to secure a large drying area.
To dry these ‘umbrella-sized’ sheets efficiently within the limited space available,
the board-drying areas were also adapted to suit the local conditions.
In other words, it was not the topography of Kurodani that gave rise to the paper’s standard size,
but rather this land that embraced and nurtured the established ‘umbrella-sized’ standard.
The wisdom and ingenuity of the people who lived in this land are etched into the very size of each sheet of washi.
🇬🇧 The sun puts the finishing touches to a sheet of washi paper Washi is not complete the moment it is formed.
The crucial process that determines its final quality is ‘drying’.
In Kurotani, there has long been a place for drying washi known as an ‘ita-hoba’.
Although situated in a valley surrounded by mountains,
sunlight streams into this spot from around 8 o’clock in the morning until around 4 o’clock in the afternoon.
The craftsmen attach each sheet of freshly made washi to a board one by one and, with the help of the sun and the wind,
allow it to dry slowly.
Rather than drying it all at once using machinery, the process of drying it gradually using the power of nature
ensures that the washi retains just the right amount of moisture, resulting in a strong yet supple texture.
Here, too, it is not just human skill that determines the quality
Sunlight
The wind blowing through the valley
The environment created by the mountains
The very nature of Kurotani is one of the artisans who brings each sheet of washi to completion
Washi-making is not a technique whereby humans triumph over nature
It is a culture that has been nurtured by understanding the power of nature and making the most of its bounty

🇬🇧 It was passed down because it kept changing When people hear the word ‘tradition’, many may imagine simply continuing to produce the same things as in the past.
However, the history of Kurotani washi is somewhat different.
As the times change, so do people’s lifestyles.
And as lifestyles change, so does the type of paper required.
The artisans of Kurotani have continually adapted to these changes.
Paper used for traditional Japanese umbrellas
Accounting paper that supported daily life
Price tags for Kyoto kimono
Cocoon bags that supported the development of sericulture
Military paper required during the war
Backing paper for sandpaper used in industrial products
Folk art paper, which gained recognition during the folk art movement
And new types of washi that are now finding their way into modern life, architecture and design
The washi produced has taken on different forms in each era
Yet there is one thing that has remained unchanged
That is Kurotani’s commitment to ‘creating paper that people need’
Culture is not about remaining unchanged
It is about embracing the demands of the times whilst preserving its essence
The 800-year history of Kurotani Washi has been built upon this very foundation
That is precisely why Kurotani Washi is not merely a culture of the past
But a culture that continues, even now, to seek new roles within a new era
🇬🇧 It was not a single craftsman who sustained that culture When looking at beautiful washi paper, many people might think that a single artisan
is responsible for creating the entire piece.
However, there is another vital element to Kurotani washi:
the ‘co-operative’.
The co-operative receives orders from the market specifying the size, thickness and intended use of the washi paper.
Based on these specifications, it assigns the work to the relevant artisans,
purchases the finished washi paper, and handles its sale.
In short, a division of labour has been established whereby the artisans devote themselves to the craft of papermaking,
whilst the cooperative acts as the link to the market.
This system is more than just a sales organisation.
It is also a community dedicated to preserving the skills of each individual artisan, maintaining quality across the entire region,
and passing on the culture of Kurotani Washi to future generations.
Furthermore, there are conditions that must be met for paper to be designated as ‘Kurotani Washi’:
It must be washi paper made in Kurotani or the surrounding area,
and it must be sold through the Kurotani Washi Cooperative.
Through this system, quality, trust and the name ‘Kurotani Washi’ have been safeguarded.
Culture cannot be passed down by one person alone.
The artisans preserve the techniques, the cooperative unites the community and connects it to the market;
it is this cumulative effort that has been the driving force sustaining Kurotani Washi for 800 years.
🇬🇧 Washi begins in the fields When people see a beautiful sheet of washi, many focus on the art of papermaking.
However, the story does not begin in the workshop.
The making of washi begins in a single field.
What grows in that field is ‘kōzo’ (paper mulberry).
In Kurotani, the kozo is harvested every November; the bark is processed over the winter, and the paper is then made.
Come spring, new shoots emerge; by summer, they have grown to about two metres,
and by autumn, they reach a height of about three metres.
Then comes the harvest once more.
This annual cycle is, in itself, the annual cycle of washi production.
Currently, much of the kozo used in Japan is imported from overseas.
Meanwhile, in Kurotani, local people are continuing their efforts to increase the cultivation of Ayabe-grown kozo.
The Kozo Cultivation Promotion Council
The Ayabe Kozo Association
And the local workshops
Although their roles differ,
they all share the desire to ‘make washi from kozo grown on this land’.
Washi is not created by paper-making techniques alone.
Tilling the soil, cultivating the kozo, harvesting it, and carefully preparing each individual fibre
It is only after a year spent in harmony with nature that a single sheet of washi is born.
Therefore, passing on Kurotani washi to future generations is not merely about preserving the techniques.
It is also about passing on the very sight of kozo being cultivated on this land to future generations.
🇬🇧 The Ongoing Challenge of Kurotani Washi Culture is passed down to future generations
Kurotani washi, with its long history
That history is not a thing of the past
New challenges continue to this very day
A new workshop is scheduled for completion in 2028
Whilst rebuilding the workshop where washi is currently produced,
tools that have been in use for many years—such as the cauldrons and papermaking troughs—will be preserved as they are
This is not so that they may be displayed in a museum
but so that they may continue to be used as active tools
It is not the buildings that are being passed on, but the ‘ongoing practice of craftsmanship’
Furthermore, as a new initiative, a five-day hands-on programme is about to begin
Participants will enter the kozo fields, process the raw materials, make paper by hand, and experience the entire process until a single sheet of washi is completed
The aim is not merely to experience washi-making
it is to foster people who understand Kurotani washi and continue to use it in their daily lives.
Culture cannot be passed on simply by knowing about it.
It is only when there are people who actually touch it, use it, and convey its value to others that it is passed on to the next generation.
Furthermore, initiatives are continuing to expand the potential of washi into new fields,
such as architecture and spatial design.
Whilst pioneering new uses,
this washi is utilised within the local community structure through the cooperative.
Taking on new challenges and preserving tradition
Although these two may seem contradictory at first glance, in Kurotani they are by no means separate concepts
The span of 800 years represents not a ‘history that has remained unchanged’, but a ‘history that has continued to evolve’
That journey continues even now, at this very moment, towards the future

🇬🇧 Culture lives on into the future through its use As I have travelled around visiting Kurotani washi, one thing has become clear to me.
Culture is not passed down simply because it remains unchanged.
It is passed down to the future because it meets the needs of its time.
Kurotani washi was born of this land.
Nurtured by nature,
supporting people’s daily lives,
transforming into products that meet the demands of the times,
embracing new techniques,
and preserved through the strength of the community.
The history of Kurotani Washi, from its inception to the present day, is not merely an accumulation of the past.
It is a history of continually finding new roles in each era.
And that journey continues to this day.
Washi used in architecture
Washi that adorns spaces
Washi as works of art
People taking on the challenge of new forms of craftsmanship
Kurotani Washi continues to expand its possibilities even now.
Culture cannot survive within the confines of a museum alone.
It is only when it is actually used,
incorporated into daily life,
and passed on to others
that it is truly passed down to the next generation.
The KUROTANI WASHI GUIDE was not created merely to introduce the history of washi.
It is a guide designed to foster new encounters with the culture of Kurotani washi.
If this GUIDE has sparked your interest in Kurotani washi,
please do visit this region.
Experience the craftsmanship of the artisans first-hand
Pick up a sheet of washi
And nurture this culture within your own daily life
Culture is not something that is simply preserved by others
Culture lives on through the involvement of each and every one of us
The story of Kurotani washi began 800 years ago
And that story continues to this day
It may well be you, holding this GUIDE in your hands, who writes the next page

Over the course of 800 years, Kurotani washi has been passed down through the generations, changing its form time and again.
Its story cannot be fully told in a single reading.
As the seasons change, so too does the landscape of Kurotani.
Spring, when the kozo trees sprout new leaves.
Winter, when paper-making begins.
The craftsmanship of the artisans also reveals different facets depending on the time of year.
That is why this GUIDE will continue to evolve.
Every time you visit Kurotani,
every time you encounter a new kind of washi,
and every time you engage in conversation with new people,
we hope this GUIDE will be a book that adds a new page with each experience.
Culture is never a finished product.
It continues to grow, little by little, as people meet, learn, use and pass it on.
And this GUIDE, too, will continue to grow alongside that journey.
Until we meet again in Kurotani,
until the day we encounter a new story.
